Creativity Spares the Bank Account

By LORNA COLQUHOUN

It looked like a wedding day, it tasted like a wedding day, and it smelled like a wedding day on a spring day last month.

There was a bride being photographed in the field, there was a florist arranging beautiful flowers with preciseness, and an elegant wedding cake appeared to await the first cut by a happy couple.

But what it really was that day at The Rocks Estate in Bethlehem was a "could-be" wedding. No vows were exchanged and no bouquet was tossed.

"This is an open house," said Diana Ma, a Littleton-based wedding planner. "We want to show that brides can be creative in their venues, without breaking the bank. Anything is possible."

Ma was among more than a dozen wedding professionals, including bridal accessories by Wicked Peacock Designs, from across the state who got together and brainstormed a wedding with a rustic room in a barn at The Rocks Estate in Bethlehem as a backdrop.

Beautifully lit and rustic, the room was set up for 60 guests and had a $30,000 budget. The average cost of a wedding in 2009 was $28,385, according to The Knot, an online wedding-planning resource.

The decorations were simple and matched the setting. It was a chance for brides to see the whole picture, not just a picture in a magazine.

"Women will go to bridal shows and see all these ideas and swatches of fabric, but they have a hard time envisioning it," Ma said. "This gives them an opportunity to touch, feel and smell."

From the rental tables and chairs to the cake, dishes and flowers, all the items used to set up the wedding are what brides planning their White Mountains weddings can expect to find locally.

More than the tangible things needed to put together a wedding, brides need to have a vision of what they want on their special day.

For example, floral designer Emily Hersig was working with a $3,000 flower budget, planning to spend $175 on each table.

She suggested brides consider a modest bouquet and use flowers to make a statement at the tables.

"Give your 'wow' where it has the most impact," she said.

Silvana Costa, owner of Wicked Peacock Designs: Boston's Sexiest, 2010
by Scott Kearnan

Costa is a Jill of all trades...she repurposes vintage materials into rings and hair accessories for her design company, Wicked Peacock Designs...We deem her a sexy dirt-kicking design diva.

Kearnan: Where'd "Wicked Peacock" originate? I was responding to an e-mail asking how I liked working in the Back Bay...I wrote, "It's a wicked peacock scene; everyone's strutting their stuff." After I was like, "Damn, that's a hot double entendre."

A "Wicked" Photo Shoot Takes Place at Medford's Brooks Estate

The purpose was to photograph and launch Costa’s new line of cocktail rings, “Gypsy Glam,” made from re-purposed vintage jewelry.

Having grown-up in Medford, it was important for Costa to shoot at the Manor.

“I woke up one day and thought, we have to do the shoot at the Brooks Estate,” she said. “I wanted to photograph in a place with a historic-classy-vintage feel, but also somewhere that reflected where I came from as a way to reconnect with my roots, since I moved back to Medford after having left for almost ten years. Medford has a lot of charm, a lot of history, and I want to call some attention to it.”

Costa couldn’t have done it without the work of Adrienne Apel, caretaker of the Brooks Estate, Tom Lincoln, MBELT president, photographer Laura Parent of Relive Photography, stylist Amanda Maciel Antunes of d.aMa Designs, models Shannon O’Brien and Brehon Garcia-Dale and coordinating manager Becky Brackett.

You can purchase Wicked Peacock Designs at Davis Squared in Davis Square, Cibeline on Charles Street in Beacon Hill or by contacting Silvana Costa at wickedpeacock@gmail.com.

To donate to the Brook Estate Land Trust and help preserve this important piece of Medford History, contact Tom Lincoln at: BrooksEstate@aol.com.

of Relive Photography:

As a wedding photographer with a Vintage Flair at Relive Photography,  I love accessories and especially “Vintage Accessories," so I thought it would be fun to show some different and unique items that are perfect for your wedding day.  I have just finished a Fashion Photo Shoot to show-off these exact items.  Brides can wear these custom hand-made rings as costume accessories on the big day, and she also can give them as gifts to her bridal party.  These rings have all been custom made by Wicked Peacock and are all created from antique estate jewelry which means that every one is a unique one of a kind.  Also Wicked Peacock is a fabulous designer of Vintage Hair Accessories and Bridal Hair Accessories.
